Trinidad Galleries

Around Trinidad : Trinidad is an island nation located about 7 miles off of the coast of Venezuela with a population of about 1.4 million. The capitol is Port of Spain on the northwest coast. I was fortunate enough to visit the island because of Sybil and Paul, a wonderful couple I traveled through Cuba with. Three of us Cuba trekers were given the most incredible 21 days in Trinidad with Paul and Sybil as our guides. Not a minute was wasted. Sybil said we could sleep when we got home and she meant it! We started with the President's fete, an all-day party for hundreds of people where we were introduced to local music, food and fun. These are miscellaneous shots from around 'D' Island.

Asa Wright Nature Center : Located high in the rain forest of Trinidad the Asa Wright Nature Center offers birders the chance to see as many as 400 species of native birds. Continental Airlines delayed our bags so I didn't have my tripod and I had to hand hold my cameras. The image sharpness suffers a little as a result.

Moko Jumbie : Like third world countries everywhere poverty in Trinidad is widespread. In order to build self-esteem in the youth in Port of Spain 'Drageon' Glen De Sousa runs an after school camp where children train in Moko Jumbie, the art of stilt-walking with its roots in Africa. It takes incredible discipline on the part of the children who show off their skill at Children Carnival, a prelude to Carnival

Pan Rehersals : Pans or steel drums provide the backdrop for Carnival. The pans are played individually or in groups that create an extraordinary range of tones. The bands practice for the big event in pan yards. It is unbelievable to watch a dozen or more musicians striking their pans in perfect unison without the benefit of written music.

Costumes : These photos were taken during Dimanche Gras, the Sunday before Carnival when the competition for the honor of King and Queen of Carnival takes place. Hundreds of man hours go into making the costumes. The contestants parade before the judges throughout the night until the Carnival King and Queen are chosen.
